Large joinery planters

Staircases are high traffic areas where employees from different teams often pass each other. Creating a pleasant space to linger helps to break down ‘work silos’ and fosters a more integrated, collaborative culture. Bespoke joinery planters with large swathes of tropical planting make a bold under stairs statement, and the stairwell becomes a central design feature instead of a forgotten one. Banquette seating can be built in to help create a lively meeting point where teams naturally converge and engage in spontaneous interactions.

Floor standing clusters

Plants look amazing when arranged in lush, cohesive groups. Floor standing clusters can play with height, texture, shape and colour to make an eye-catching display that draws people in – even better when combined with seating. A floor standing cluster provides much more visual impact than single specimens dotted around. Think majestic palms combined with magnificent monstera and striking strelitzia. Grouped plants also support each other physically, mimicking natural ecosystems and helping to retain humidity levels. They also enhance air quality more effectively by increasing the amount of oxygen released and pollutants absorbed – no wonder people are drawn into biophilic displays!

Trailers and climbers

Climbing and trailing plants are ideal for stairwells. Originating from the forest floor, this tough group of plants is tolerant of lower light levels and grows quickly. Just as they use tendrils and vines to clamber up trees in the wild, sinuous climbers such as philodendron and epipremnum can be trained to scramble up entire stairwells, clothing bare walls with lush foliage. They can be heavily pruned by our skilled plant maintenance team or left to go wild for that jungle vibe. They look particularly effective when combined with interesting hanging light features, transforming the vibe of a staircase completely.

Floor standing troughs and cubes

Our design team is accustomed to working closely with architects, design consultancies and fit-out specialists to match any biophilic display we do with the overall design concept throughout the space. We often brainstorm and come up with sketches to help visualise and refine ideas to create a harmonious space. For instance, where one design team may want to blur the hard angles of a stairwell with curves and foliage, another may want to take a more linear approach. We stock many different styles and shapes of pots and troughs, and can easily switch to rectangular troughs and planting cubes to carve out a clean, structured space. Alternatively, we can use bespoke joinery for a wholly tailored solution.

With thoughtful design and the power of biophilia, staircases and stairwells can be transformed from dull, cold spaces into thriving thoroughfares. The echo of steps on stone can be replaced with bustling activity and the sound of colleagues connecting. The stairwell can be a refreshing, informal change from the traditional meeting room, providing a bonus area for impromptu meet-ups without the need for extra space or further renovation. Step this way for more ideas on how to maximise under-used space!
